Grid-forming BESS redefines the role of energy storage: First one in Nordics

Merus Power, together with Alpiq, has achieved a historic milestone for the Nordic energy market: the delivery of the region’s first grid-forming battery energy storage system (BESS). The 30 MW / 36 MWh system, located in Valkeakoski, Finland, is not only a technological breakthrough but also a significant step forward for Europe’s energy transition.

The project is part of Alpiq’s strategic commitment to strengthen its position as a flexibility provider across Europe. At the same time, it highlights our unique ability to deliver fully integrated, Nordic-optimized battery energy storage systems. By combining Alpiq’s market presence with our end-to-end expertise, the system supports security of supply and enables greater integration of renewable generation.

A pioneering project

This installation meets Finland’s Transmission System Operator, Fingrid’s advanced grid-forming requirements, making it the first BESS in the Nordics to provide black-start capability and directly contribute to grid stability. Unlike traditional grid-following converters, which can sometimes weaken the electrical network, the system strengthens it. It has successfully passed Fingrid’s strict simulation and site test requirements, considered some of the most demanding in Europe.

For Alpiq, this project marks its first grid-scale BESS investment, reinforcing its role as a flexibility provider in European energy markets. The system enables Alpiq to contribute to a more secure and climate-friendly energy supply while supporting the integration of renewable energy generation.

Merus Power’s integrated delivery

We acted as project developer, seller, and EPC contractor, delivering a turnkey solution optimized for Nordic conditions. This included everything from site development and permitting to the installation of our own power conversion systems (PCS) and power plant controller. By handling the entire value chain in-house, we ensured seamless technical alignment and maximum performance.

The system was purpose-built for Finland’s demanding climate. A specially designed battery shelter ensures optimal indoor conditions, enhances accessibility, and improves maintainability during harsh winters. This tailored approach sets a new benchmark for reliability in challenging environments.

Scalability and replication

The Valkeakoski project demonstrates the scalability of our 30 MW / 36 MWh, 110 kV concept. This technical solution has already been replicated in projects with other leading partners, highlighting its adaptability across markets. With existing land contracts and grid agreements, the site could be expanded to 30 MW / 60 MWh or even 60 MW / 60 MWh in the future.

A milestone for Europe’s energy transition

Together with Alpiq, we have delivered:

  • The first grid-forming BESS in the Nordics
  • Enhanced grid stability and black-start capability
  • A climate-optimized, replicable design
  • A benchmark for large-scale storage across Europe

This project is more than a technical success; it is a pioneering step that redefines the role of energy storage in strengthening power systems.

Looking ahead

This BESS in Valkeakoski, Finland, is only the beginning. As Europe accelerates toward a renewable-driven energy future, grid-forming technology will play a crucial role in ensuring system stability. With demand for large-scale storage growing, we are prepared to contribute with scalable, climate-resilient solutions. The potential to expand our Valkeakoski site underscores the flexibility and future-proof design of our system. Together, we are building a more resilient, flexible, and sustainable energy future for the Nordics and beyond.
