Merus Power to deliver an energy storage system to Lidl
Press release 11.10.2018
Merus Power and Lidl, a supermarket chain giant, have entered into an agreement to supply an energy storage system to Lidl’s new distribution center in Järvenpää, currently under construction.
The delivery contract includes a Merus ESS 2.6 MW energy storage system, which is Finnish state-of-the-art power electronics and control system technology. The energy storage system’s power conversion systems (PCS) and software are designed and manufactured in Merus Power’s factory in Nokia and delivered as a turnkey project to Järvenpää. A special feature of the Merus Power energy storage system is the power quality improvement functionality, which can be utilized continuously regardless of energy storing or discharging features.
A third of Lidl’s new distribution center is cold-storage. The challenge there is to manage the indoor temperature reliably and efficiently. The energy management system of the distribution center utilizes both renewable solar energy produced by their own solar panels and energy purchased from the electricity market. Merus Power supplies energy storage to ensure efficient and uninterrupted co-operation of these energy sources.
Thanks to Merus Power’s energy storage system, Lidl has the potential to improve the energy efficiency of their distribution center, e.g. by limiting the network peak-power, by operating as an active harmonic filter, as a real time reactive power compensator or as a voltage regulator. “Experience will show us how we can fully utilize the many features of the Merus ESS system” says Kalle Hintikka, project manager at Lidl.
However, there are already plans for the use of the energy storage. “Merus ESS’s energy storage system participates in a frequency containment reserve market, where it is possible to make a profit. Using it together with other systems increases energy efficiency, “continues Kalle Hintikka.
“Delivering a megawatt-class energy storage system to an advanced plant utilizing renewable energy sources is a world-class reference for Merus Power. Co-operation with Lidl fully supports Merus Power’s strategic growth in worldwide energy storage markets.” says Aki Leinonen, Merus Power’s sales director
