Tackling harmonics on a weak grid in a fish processing plant

Segment background

Fish processing plants play a pivotal role in the global seafood industry, transforming harvested fish into various products for consumption. However, the operation of such facilities can introduce a range of power quality challenges due to the non-linear nature of their processing equipment, including the use of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). VFDs have been known to cause problems such as harmonic distortion and addressing them within the fish processing environment is essential to maintaining operational efficiency and overall sustainability.

Challenges at the customer’s plant

Our customer operates a fish processing plant that relies on a weak grid, a scenario that has presented unique challenges. Within the facility, they employ several VFDs, essential for controlling the speed of the motors in various processing equipment for the refrigeration and freezing of fresh fish. Unfortunately, these VFDs have been the source of considerable problems, particularly in relation to harmonic distortion. This issue is magnified on a weak grid. Weak grids often struggle with handling harmonic distortions, which can lead to problems such as overheating and voltage instability. The presence of harmonics poses a potential risk to both the facility’s electrical system and its overall operations.

The central goal of the project was to ensure that the facility’s operations remained unaffected by the harmonics generated by the extensive range of processing equipment and electronically controlled machinery. Addressing the potential challenges arising from the weak power grid was also a key consideration.

Our Merus® Solution

The requirement for harmonic mitigation was driven by the supply company, who were aware of existing harmonic levels, and impressed by the ‘zero impact’ solution of Merus® HPQ-Hybrid Power Quality. Designed with adaptable active harmonic filtering, Merus® HPQ targets the reduction of harmonic distortions, thereby enhancing energy efficiency.

In the decision-making process, the expertise and power quality measurement provided by Merus Power’s local partner, Power Capacitors Ltd., played a crucial role. Considering the spatial constraints at the facility, the compact footprint of Merus® HPQ was also a determining factor, ensuring a solution that aligned with both the operational demands and the available space.
