Merus Power will deliver a battery energy storage system of over 5 MW / 10 MWh to Savon Voima in Kuopio

Merus Power has made an agreement with Savon Voima Oy on a 5 MW / 10 MWh energy storage system. The energy storage system will be delivered to Juankoski in Kuopio at the beginning of 2027. The companies also intend to conclude an agreement on comprehensive service and maintenance services.

The energy storage system will be built in the immediate vicinity of the Juankoski hydropower plant in a historical factory area. Merus Power is responsible for the equipment delivery of the energy storage system, installation, testing, and commissioning.

The energy storage system designed for market use is also capable of so-called black start. This means that the energy storage system has the capability to restore the electricity grid into operation after a power outage. Savon Voima additionally has plans to develop the entirety in the future together with the adjacent Juankoski hydropower plant.

Savon Voima’s first energy storage system connected to hydropower production is a very interesting entirety, which helps us to target electricity production more precisely to demand. We wanted as our partner an experienced and reliable operator that has a strong track record of demanding energy solutions. Merus Power’s domestic technology and deep expertise ensure a high-quality implementation,” comments Savon Voima’s CEO Juha Räsänen.

Energy storage systems are in a key role in strengthening the flexibility and security of supply of the energy system. The Juankoski project combines modern energy technology with a historical environment and supports a market-based electricity system,” says Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power.
