Defense Committee member Pauli Kiuru visits Merus Power

Member of Parliament Pauli Kiuru recently visited Merus Power’s office and factory in Ylöjärvi, as well as the Valkeakoski energy storage facility. The visit focused on Finnish energy infrastructure, energy storage facilities as part of security of supply, and cybersecurity. Kiuru is a member of the Defense Committee and vice chair and member of the Intelligence Oversight Committee.

In Ylöjärvi, Kiuru learned about Merus Power’s operations, production, and technology. During the factory tour, our CEO Kari Tuomala and Merus Power’s Chair of the Board of Directors Tapani Kiiski presented the company’s solutions that support the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid and strengthen the flexibility of the energy system.

During the day, discussions focused in particular on the role of energy storage in the stability of the energy system and the importance of cybersecurity in a rapidly electrifying society. Our CDO, Juha Saarela, presented Merus Power’s cybersecurity solutions and the continuous monitoring and risk management of energy storage facilities to Kiuru.

The visit continued to the energy storage facility in Valkeakoski, which we delivered to our customer Alpiq last year. This is the first grid-forming energy storage facility in the Nordic countries. The Valkeakoski facility is a concrete example of the role of energy storage facilities in balancing regional and national electricity systems and strengthening security of supply.

It was great to learn about Merus Power’s operations at the Ylöjärvi plant. It is important that we have domestic technological expertise and operators who develop and export solutions for securing critical infrastructure. The Valkeakoski energy storage facility is a good example of this, and it was particularly interesting to visit the site in my hometown of Valkeakoski, Kiuru commented on the visit.

The day went very well, and we would like to thank MP Kiuru for his time. It is important for Merus Power to engage in open and expert dialogue with decision-makers on the development, security of supply, and safety of the energy sector.
