Beyond technology: Building expertise through Merus Power Service Training

Advanced power quality technology can solve complex challenges in electrical networks, but technology alone is not enough. To get the best results from any solution, the people working with it need to understand how it behaves, how to commission it correctly, how to maintain it, and what to do when challenges arise.

At Merus Power, technical expertise has always been an important part of what we offer. We want to make sure that this knowledge also reaches the people working with Merus® solutions around the world.

That is why we organize Merus Power Service Training for our partners in the spring and fall at our headquarters and factory in Ylöjärvi, Finland. The training focuses specifically on our active harmonic filtering solutions, Merus® A2 Active Harmonic Filters. Led by our experienced service specialists, the training brings together technical knowledge, practical exercises, and field experience.

The goal is simple: to give our partners the knowledge and confidence to get the most out of Merus® A2 technology and provide excellent service to customers locally.

Great technology needs great technical expertise

Power quality applications are rarely one-size-fits-all. Electrical environments differ, customer requirements vary, and situations in the field do not always follow a textbook.

This is where expertise makes a difference.

Understanding the technology behind Merus® A2 Active Harmonic Filters is important, but our Service Training goes further. Participants learn how to apply that knowledge in practice, from installation and commissioning to operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

By working directly with the equipment alongside Merus Power service specialists, participants can build experience in an environment where there is time to ask questions, test different approaches, and understand not only what to do, but why.

Following our first Service Training, Mika Laakso, in his previous role as Aftersales Manager at Merus Power, described the value of the hands-on approach:

“The first service training was a resounding success, with participants providing positive feedback and gaining valuable expertise. During the session at Merus Power’s premises, attendees independently commissioned a Merus® A2 device and replaced components in the A2 module.”

This ability to turn technical knowledge into practical competence is at the heart of the training.

Building confidence to solve problems independently

One of our main objectives is to enable partners to become increasingly independent when working with Merus® solutions.

A trained service professional should be able to approach a customer site with confidence, commission the equipment correctly, recognize when something is not working as expected, and systematically find the cause.

This benefits everyone involved.

Partners can solve more situations locally without always needing direct support from Merus Power. Customers receive knowledgeable service closer to them. Installations and commissioning processes become more consistent. Potential problems can be identified earlier, and the overall quality of the delivery and service process improves.

The expertise gained during training can also spread further. Participants can become Merus® product champions within their own organizations, sharing knowledge and best practices with colleagues.

As Rahul Prakash, Head of Aftersales and Service at Merus Power, explains:

“We encourage our other partners to participate in our next training session because these sessions help build technical confidence and strengthen collaboration across our network.”

Learning by doing

There is only so much that can be learned from presentations and technical documentation. That is why hands-on practice plays such an important role in Merus Power Service Training.

Participants work directly with Merus® A2 Active Harmonic Filters and explore topics such as commissioning, configuration, internal measurements, software, troubleshooting, maintenance, and component replacement.

These exercises connect theory with the situations participants may encounter at customer sites.

They also help establish common ways of working. When commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting are performed according to proven procedures, this supports consistent quality throughout the solution’s lifecycle.

Marek Sikora from EPQS, Poland, highlighted this after participating in the training:

“Excellent training and a great atmosphere provided the perfect opportunity to explore many aspects of active harmonic filters. The standardized procedures for commissioning will facilitate possible warranty procedures in the future. Highly recommend!”

Sharing expertise across our partner network

Service Training is not only about transferring knowledge from Merus Power to our partners. Bringing service professionals together also creates an opportunity to exchange experiences.

Participants arrive in Ylöjärvi with different backgrounds, markets, customer applications, and experiences from the field. The questions and discussions that emerge during training can be just as valuable as the planned technical content.

For Merus Power, these conversations are important too. They give our service specialists insight into the situations our partners encounter around the world and help us continuously develop the way we support our network.

For partners who are newer to Merus® technology, spending time directly with our specialists and equipment can also accelerate the learning process significantly.

Dave Sage from Kildonan Energy, Canada, shared his experience:

“As new partners of Merus Power, we gained a much deeper understanding of the functionality, configuration, troubleshooting, and communication of the A2 modules. The training facility is truly exceptional.”

Expertise is part of the solution

When a Merus® solution is delivered to a customer, our responsibility does not end with the technology itself.

We want our partners and customers to have access to the expertise, tools, and support they need throughout the lifecycle of the solution. Service Training is an important part of this approach, but it is not the only one.

The Merus® Support Portal provides partners and customers with another way to access technical support and our knowledge base. It helps make information easier to find and enables our service team to support customers and partners efficiently when additional expertise is needed.

Together, training, technical support, digital tools, and close collaboration create a service network around our technology.

Because ultimately, achieving excellent power quality is not only about having the right equipment. It is about combining the right technology with people who understand it and know how to make it perform at its best.

Developing expertise together

The knowledge exchange during Service Training works both ways. Our partners bring experience from different industries, electrical environments, customer applications, and markets around the world. Their questions, observations, and experiences give our specialists valuable insight into how Merus® A2 Active Harmonic Filters are used in the field and the challenges customers face in different applications.

Bringing this expertise together helps all of us learn. It gives Merus Power new perspectives that can contribute to how we develop our support, share knowledge, and work with our partners in the future. At the same time, the relationships built during training make it easier to continue exchanging expertise long after everyone has returned home.
