Substantial savings at a printing press in Northern Ireland

Challenges in the customer’s printing press

At the Belfast Telegraph, large UPS feeding printing presses, and IT- and newsroom offices were suffering from non-linear loads that created voltage harmonic distortions as high as 8.6 %. Distortions this high cannot be tolerated as they can harm electrical equipment in a number of ways.

As the facility was risking a UPS failure, the customer decided to purchase a new UPS. The supplier, however, could not guarantee the future operation of the UPS with such elevated levels of voltage distortion. Nuisance tripping was a permanent threat to vital data in the IT- and newsroom offices unprotected against harmonic distortions.

Our Merus® Solution

Merus Power supplied the customer with a low voltage Merus® A-series Active Harmonic Filter through Philip J Alcorn & Co, the company’s distribution partner in Northern Ireland. Fast response and selective harmonic cancellation were the key product features and criteria for the solution.

A Merus® Active Filter was installed parallel to the loads. Merus® Active Filters are configurable to meet various customer requirements. Thanks to the modern touch screen human-machine-interface (HMI) configuration, it is simple and just a few clicks away.

Results and customer benefits

The effective and fast-responding Merus® A-series Active Harmonic Filter ensures that the Belfast Telegraph facility is now running smoothly. Harmonic distortions were brought down significantly and are now well below the requirements of the G5/4 power quality standard.

Threat to important data was deterred by the installation of a Merus® A-series Active Harmonic Filter. Harmonic mitigation maximized the UPS service life and resulted in smooth operation.
